CONTAINER DEPOSIT LEGISALTION SUPPORTED BY MOST TASMANIANS
91 Per Cent Support 10c Container Deposit According to EMRS Poll

The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the results of a recent Boomerang Alliance commissioned EMRS poll, showing that 91 per cent of Tasmanians supported the implementation of Container Deposit Legislation (CDL), just as the Greens have been advocating for years.

Greens Environment spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said South Australia has been running a container deposit scheme (CDS) for many years, and Northern Territory is soon to introduce a CDS, and it is now clear that Tasmania has community support to introduce deposit legislation here.

“The Boomerang Alliance has done amazing work in commissioning this EMRS poll, which has given strength the Greens’ policy to introduce CDL showing 91 per cent of Tasmanians support such a scheme,” Ms O’Connor said.

“South Australia has worked under a CDL for many years, and Northern Territory soon to be, which leaves Tasmania on the outskirts if we don’t act now, with what can only be called widespread community support.”

“Given that Tasmania has the worst litter rates in the nation, yet reaps enormous economic benefits from its clean green brand, a Container Deposit Scheme here makes sound environmental and economic sense.”

“The Boomerang Alliance is industry funded, not government funded, lending strong cause for the issue to be dealt with, especially as the government would not incur any costs, except for the drafting of legislation.”

“The Greens have continuously been calling for Container Deposit Legislation in Tasmania in the absence of a national policy, and encourages the Labor and Liberal parties to support CDL in Tasmania which is inline with community expectation,” Ms O’Connor said.
