Regarding the announcement by Lord Mayor Alderman Valentine that Hobart council has backed away from its plans to install traffic calming in Waterworks Valley, the affected community is warning the mayor that it still has a moral and legal duty-of-care to protect the safety of its citizens.
Council engineers and planning staff have spent six long years of community consultation and all of this work, with the support of a clear majority of Waterworks and Ridgeway residents, can not be swept under the carpet.
Families in the affected community have a real concern for the safety of their children, this long winding road having inadequate footpaths and a high level of traffic.
Community members have been very patient and understand the frustration of council staff in being thwarted by legal process.
The community has put a case to Council that this issue is a litmus test for its much larger vision to make Hobart a people friendly, pedestrian friendly city. “If Council is unable to resolve this local issue, then it will have no chance in gaining agreement on the Gehl Archtects’ recommendations on ways to make Hobart a people friendly city.”
