LIVING BELOW THE LINE: POLLIE GOES HUNGRY
The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has signed up to Live Below the Line and is surviving the week on just $2-a-day worth of food.
Mr Wilkie prepared a budget lunch today for three Live Below the Line organisers to promote the campaign that highlights the plight of the 1.4 billion people in the world who live below the poverty line.
“This is no easy challenge for people used to eating well, but I believe it is a great way to raise both money and awareness for the 1.4 billion people who live like this every day – and who have to make $2 cover a lot more than just their food,’’ Mr Wilkie said.
Two days into the five-day challenge, Mr Wilkie said giving up his morning coffee had proved the hardest.
“In our busy lives, it’s easy to take for granted our instant access to clean water, shelter and fresh and nutritious food,’’ Mr Wilkie said.
“This challenge forces you to think about what life is like for the 1.4 billion people in the world who live in extreme poverty and go without every day.’’
Donations to support Mr Wilkie will go to the Global Poverty Project which seeks to address critical poverty issues around the world.
