OPPOSITION leader Tony Abbott has contradicted his party’s stance on managed investment schemes.
Mr Abbott told a community meeting in Colac last week MIS were “essentially tax vehicles” and “are a problem”.
His comments put him at odds with Liberal policy, which supports MIS, and more in line with Nationals’ opposition to the schemes.
“Rules which take land out of sensible productive (sic) and put it into production for things which are essentially tax vehicles as opposed to real industries are a problem,” Mr Abbot told the meeting in response to a question about MIS.
Mr Abbott’s comments follow comments last year by deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop that MIS was “unfair” and had led to “abuse of the tax system” and “a level of inequity”.
However, Tasmanian senator Richard Colbeck later said the coalition had no plans to get rid of MIS
