The Tasmanian Greens today lodged a petition of over 500 signatures in Parliament drawing attention to 30,000 properties held in fee simple (a common form of complete ownership of real property) which have effectively had their common law rights removed due to the Protection of Agricultural Land Policy.
Greens Planning spokesperson Tim Morris MP said the petition was organised by a private citizen concerned with the lack of rights, as well as the substantial drop in land value without the slightest attempt of compensation to the affected land owners.
“Over 500 people have signed the privately organised petition stating their dissent from aspects of the Protection of Agricultural Land Policy, which has effectively removed their common law rights,” Mr Morris said.
“The properties are held as fee simple titles and this policy has removed the ability for owners to build dwellings on some properties, significantly reducing the value of their property.”
“This petition indicates that there was insufficient process of community consultation before the Protection of Agricultural Land Policy was implemented,” Mr Morris said.
