Majority of State ALP Leaders now disagree with Gillard on Gay Marriage
Marriage equality advocates have welcomed support for same-sex marriage from Victorian State Labor leader, Daniel Andrews.
Yesterday, on the ABC’s 730 Victoria Mr Andrews said “I, like a growing number of Victorians, believe that it’s unfair that same-sex couples in Victoria – indeed right across Australia – are not able to exercise the option,” he said.
Mr Andrews joins Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, Tasmanian Premier, Lara Giddings, and NSW ALP Leader, John Robertson, in support for Marriage Equality.
Alex Greenwich, Australian Marriage Equality National Convnener: “Mr. Andrews support and comments are indeed encouraging to those families and couples discriminated against by the Marriage Act”
“He joins a growing chorus of support within the ALP, who represent the views of a majority of Australians, and and even bigger majority of ALP voters”.
“This level of support and advocacy from within the top ranks of the ALP will be key to delivering the outcome that a majority of of Australians will want from Labor’s National Conference later this year”
Prime Minister Gillard has repeatedly says she opposes marriage equality, and has continued to refuse to meet with advocates, couples, and families directly affected by this issue.
The Labor Party will consider the issue of marriage equality at its national conference later this year.
