I SLEEP IN HAYSHEDS AND CORNERS

There’s a strong tradition of successful collaborations between artists and writers, from high art through to really cool children’s picture books. But what about between writers and the new craft movements?

I Sleep in Haysheds and Corners is a book that features Tasmania’s best young writers and crafters working together for the first time.

Inscrutable Press received nearly eighty stories from all over the State responding to the project’s title, from primary school students through to writers in their late twenties. Our favourite ten have been included in the
collection – there’s a wide range of themes and styles, from hallucinogenic encounters with a great white shark in an island pub, to quiet reflections on formative experiences in a simple country hayshed.

Young people have been applying innovative styles and an artistic sensibility to mtraditional craft techniques for some years, and a host of books (Meet Me At Mikes, Crafty Minx), blogs (Things To Make & Do), collectives (Crafternoon, Brown Owls) and small markets (Odd + Even, The Market, Makers Market) have sprung up. Each of our Tasmanian handpicked crafters received one story, which they have responded to in their practice. We’re excited at the range of submissions; a knitted book, pieces of jewellery encasing tokens of memory, a leather suit, delicate letterpress designs.

I Sleep in Haysheds and Corners is edited by Tasmanian creatives Ben Walter and Kelly Eijdenberg. The project was funded by the Australia Council’s Write in Your Face Program through a grant provided to young people working with literature in innovative ways.

It will be launched by well-known Tasmanian artist Patrick Hall at 6pm on Friday 15 April at Fullers Bookshop Hobart, 131 collins street, where the craft items included in the book will also be on display.
