Styx Valley public event this Sunday
A DAY IN THE STYX CELEBRATES HCV FORESTS AND A STYX NATIONAL PARK
The Wilderness Society will host a public event in the Styx this coming Sunday to showcase the high conservation values of Tasmanias native forests and celebrate the prospect of new national parks and reserves as part of the implementation of the recently signed Statement of Principles.
The event will demonstrate citizen science projects researching carbon storage and devil habitat values and lead walks into established research areas. People will learn first hand how to account for forest carbon in a demonstration carbon accounting plot and can cuddle up to some of the worlds largest hardwood trees.
Speakers will include well known conservationist Geoff Law, wildlife veterinarian and devil expert Collette Harmsen and Still Wild Still Threatened campaigner Ula Majewski.
When: Sunday 5th December
12 noon
Where: Logging coupe SX9B
Jubilee Road
Styx Valley
(approx 1.5 hrs from Hobart)
See map in attached brochure and follow the signs on the day
The event will be held in coupe SX9B, planned for logging but currently under a temporary exemption pending the outcome of the implementation of the Statement of Principles. It is close coupe TN34B, a HCV coupe currently being logged and subject to recent exposure.
Federal Government support and an immediate start to the agreed moratorium on logging HCV forest areas will also be a key focus of the day.
