“I welcome the decision in the High Court dismissing the claims disputing my eligibility to sit in the Australian Senate,” Senator Abetz said today.

“I have and always have been eligible to be elected as a Senator representing the people of the great State of Tasmania.”

“I would also like to thank all those who provided me their messages of support.”

“The legal action brought against me by the failed petitioner is part of an ongoing campaign of spurious allegations against me,” Senator Abetz said.

“Regretfully the untruths peddled by the failed petitioner fuelled some ugly commentary in the Tasmanian Times and elsewhere.”

“I would like to thank the mainstream media, which, when these unfounded allegations were first raised in 2007, saw fit not to pursue them. Their judgement and discernment has been vindicated,” Senator Abetz said.

“The same, regretfully, cannot be said for the Mercury Newspaper in Tasmania,” Senator Abetz said.

“I have spent the last 16 years of my life fighting for the best interests of the people of Tasmania and I intend to continue to work hard to represent the people who elected me to this privileged office,” Senator Abetz said.
