Southern Water today issued a warning to customers to be wary of accepting services from telephone callers claiming to represent the corporation.
Southern Water’s CEO, Mr Mike Paine, said some customers had reported receiving calls from a company claiming to be Southern Water, asking questions about water quality and offering to fit a water filter system.
“Private companies have every right to try to sell their water-related products but we’re concerned that some may be misleading home owners into believing that they actually represent Southern Water,” Mr Paine said.
“While Southern Water representatives may need to call customers on occasion, for example to seek feedback on our performance for research purposes or advise on water outages, at no time would we promote the sale or installation of a commercial water-related product.
“I urge customers to take steps to verify the identity of any callers claiming to represent Southern Water. This can be done by contacting our Customer Service Centre on 13 MYWATER (13 6992).
“And as an added precaution, all field workers who may need to enter private property can be asked to display a photo-identification card.”
Mr Paine said he appreciated the vigilance of customers in reporting any suspicious activities to Southern Water.
“Unfortunately, in this day and age, people do need to be especially careful about protecting their privacy,” he said. “If customers have any concerns in this regard they should contact us immediately on 13 MYWATER (13 6992).”
