After an intense 2 week campaign, Longford residents were able to convince Northern Midlands Councillors that the proposed extensions to the new supermarket development were not in the best interests of the town.
The meeting was moved from the Council Chambers to the Town Hall to accommodate over 150 members of the public who attended.
Six members of the public spoke against the proposal, raising concerns about the illegal works already commenced at the development site and the effects on both the local businesses and the more disadvantaged members of our community of moving essential services away from the main street precinct.
There were also concerns about preserving our heritage buildings and the effects the proposal would have on tourism and traffic flow at the entrance to the town.
Most Council members spoke and it gradually became apparent that they had listened to their community and the developers’s application was rejected, to overwhelming applause.
