Architectural journey of discovery launches this weekend – Hobart Architecture Week: Sun 24 Oct – Sat 30 Oct
Join us for an architectural ‘journey of discovery’ through Hobart, a free public lecture revealing the soon to be opened Museum of New and Old Art (MONA) at Berriedale, a fast-paced slide night with insight into landscape and architecture– all these and more will feature as key attractions of Hobart Architecture Week, launching this Sunday.
The Australian Institute of Architects’ Tasmanian Chapter has developed a range of activities designed to interest young and old. Join us for any of the following:
Sunday 24 Oct – Saturday 30 Oct: Hidden Hobart, a self-guided architectural tour. Grab our map, which includes an architectural history of Hobart. Spot the architectural models and displays in various shop windows as you walk. Complete the clues, submit your answers and go in a draw to win prizes valued at over $1,000. Free event. Monday 25 Oct: Free public lecture with Australian Institute of Architects National President Karl Fender and James Pearce, of award-winning practice Fender Katsalidis. Karl & James will discuss a range of exciting projects, including the amazing MONA project at the Moorilla Estate, the MONA Pavilions, the multi-award winning NewActon East project in Canberra, and key issues facing the profession. Dechaineux Theatre, UTAS School of the Arts, Hunter Street. 6pm- 7.30pm. Free event.
Wednesday 26 Oct: Don’t miss this punchy “10×6” night – featuring six speakers each presenting 10 slides in 10 minutes focused on architecture and its relationship to landscape. Speakers include David Trevalia architect, Bec Stephens artist, Meg Baynes urban designer, Andrew Smith from Parks Tasmania, Scott Christensen graduate of architecture and a mystery guest.

Thursday 27 Oct: Q&A forum on ‘Trust Me I’m an Architect’, moderated by ABC Radio host Tim Cox. Panellists include Tim Penny architect and former Tasmanian Chapter President, Sean Kelly artist and curator, Natasha Cica director of the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Ethics at UTAS, Jude Abell graduate of architecture, sculptor and architectural writer, Peter Killick Manager Southern Tasmania for Fairbrother and possibly more.
