Goodwood Grows Good Readers
The Goodwood Grows Good Readers Project has come to an end and the book of the
children’s story interpretations is being launched on the 15th of September 2010 at
10.00 AM.
All participants in the Project were given a story book, textas and a project book.
Families were asked to read the book at home and to encourage their children to draw
what they thought the story was about. The interpretations were then made into our
own book.
The aim of the Project was to:
 encourage parents to interact with their children using appropriate literature;
 introduce books into the family home;
 encourage children to read with their parents;
 encourage children to creatively express their thoughts about the book;
 introduce children to books and to encourage them to value reading;
 assist in the process of getting children ready to learn in their school years; and
 empower parents to teach their children to read and take part in their education.
Eighteen children participated, aging from 10 months to 4 years. One stand out success
was a father, who because of his own literacy difficulties had never read to his children
and is now reading the book his family was given to his daughter every night.
This four month Project was funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund via the Tasmanian
Association of Community Houses.
