SOW STALL BAN WILL BOOST BRAND

Benefits Will Flow From Ban on Disgusting Practice

The Tasmanian Greens today reiterated their call for the Labor Government to legislate a ban on the inhumane and disgusting practice of keeping pigs in sow stalls 60 centimetres wide and two metres long for their entire lives.
Greens Primary Industries spokesperson Kim Booth MP said the practice of keeping sows in stalls is extremely cruel, has been banned in the United Kingdom for ten years and is being banned voluntarily by various Australian and Tasmanian producers, and in the interests of maintaining and building upon Tasmania’s reputation for top quality clean produce the practice should be banned in Tasmania.
“The cruel and inhumane practice of keeping sows in stalls clashes directly with Tasmania’s brand for top quality produce, and the Labor Government needs to legislate a ban on these inhumane and torturous devices, and allow Tasmanian pork producers to add to the integrity of our brand instead of degrading it,” said Mr Booth.
“Keeping pigs in tiny stalls for their entire life is cruel, inhumane, disgusting, and unconscionable.”
“If mainland states of Australia wish to continue this practice then that is their unfortunate choice, but Tasmania has a hard-earned reputation for top quality produce, and a ban on sow stalls would dovetail perfectly into our existing brand.”
“Gandhi famously said that the moral progress and greatness of a society can be judged by the way we treat our animals.”
“The Tasmanian Greens are calling on the Labor Government to legislate a ban on sow stalls in the interests of animal welfare, humanity, and the wider Tasmanian brand,” said Mr Booth.
