The Tasmanian Greens today called for the Infrastructure Minister Lara Giddings to immediately clarify that the Chief Executive Officer of the State’s new rail company is authorised to speak publicly about all aspects of Tasrail’s operations, following reports that the CEO has been ‘gagged’.
Greens Infrastructure spokesperson Tim Morris MP said that there is enormous valid public interest in the new rail company, following years of bungling and neglect by previous governments, and it does not bode well should it be shrouded in secrecy.
“The Greens are calling on the Minister, Lara Giddings, to immediately clarify media reports that Tasrail CEO Damien White has been effectively gagged by a directive to only discuss publicly operational matters pertinent to the company but to not discuss financial matters,” Mr Morris said.
“Minister Giddings must make it clear that the Tasrail CEO is not hindered in any way from using his own discretion when it comes to being transparent over all relevant aspects of this company’s operations and financial situation, given that it is a State Owned Company funded by the Tasmanian taxpayer.”
“If it is good enough for the bosses of other Government Business Enterprises and State owned Companies, such as Forestry Tasmania, Hydro Tasmania and Tasports to comment on their respective business operations then the head of Tasrail must also have that freedom and responsibility.”
