GOVERNOR Peter Underwood has delivered a good-humoured swipe at the forestry industry while opening the University of Tasmania’s new $2.3 million furniture design building at Inveresk.
In front of about 100 guests at the ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday, Mr Underwood said a dedicated school of furniture design had been a long time coming.
“Tasmania is just the place to develop such a school because we have an abundance of fine timber – forestry is working on this, but at the moment we still have an abundance,” he joked, before nodding to reporters and saying:
“Don’t write that down.”
According to the school of architecture and design’s acting head, Professor Stephen Loo, the building “is a good example of a contemporary interpretation of a traditional large shed”.
