Water contamination scandal warrants leaders’ debate
After more startling revelations about toxics in Tasmania’s drinking water Our Common Ground has called for a dedicated leaders’ debate into the scandal.
For at least six years, politicians have dismissed, ridiculed and condemned community concerns about toxic drinking water in an attempt to silence them. But evidence is mounting that local doctors and scientists were right.
“It’s an issue that goes to the core of how the timber industry is regulated in Tasmania.” said Ahmet Bektas a spokesperson for Our Common Ground.
“If a poisoned water supply doesn’t warrant serious political debate, what does?” he said. “In recent days, we’ve seen politicians talking about drag racing and V8 supercars. They should be talking about how toxins got into water and what to do about it.”
He said punting the issue until after the election is not good enough.

“Few things are more important than the security of our drinking water supply, and Tasmanians deserve to hear what politicians will do about it—before they vote, not after,” he said.
Our Common Ground is a coalition of community and business leaders, environment groups and timber workers who are committed to finding a solution to the conflict over forestry in Tasmania.
