I guess it’s because so many people could see the smoke that there was such a massive impact on the website.
We were first notified about 5:30 that there were some problems with the website.
Our IT people responded very quickly – I’m not a technical person, but they re-booted it or something and got things going fairly quickly.
I can’t tell you how many hits there were yesterday but a couple of weeks ago we had 3 million hits in one day.
Talking to our IT people this morning – there were two other servers, they’ve just had some re-configuration last week, they’re not tested to the point where we wanted them to be tested but we put those into play last night, shortly after 7:30, and that appears to be working OK at the moment.
The website has become enormously popular and we mention it in all our advertising.
On one hand it’s successful because people are knowing about it (sic) but on the other hand the traffic to the website escalated to the point where we weren’t anticipating.
We did go and buy some extra servers to deal with that but they need to be configured and tested. We do know that we’ve got a fair bit more testing that we want to do over the next few days.
It’s still only technology – we can’t guarantee it.
