The Tarkine National Coalition has welcomed today’s announcement of the Emergency National Heritage Listing of the Tarkine.
Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett is to be congratulated on the decision to list the Tarkine based on the TNC’s nomination of 447,000 hectares.
“This is a significant milestone in the campaign to protect the Tarkine, and now ensures that the Tarkine Road and any future developments will now have to be assessed against the National Heritage Listing” said Tarkine National Coalition’s Tourism Project Officer, Scott Jordan.
The original nomination was lodged in 2004, with a unanimous motion of the Senate recommending that the nomination be placed on the Australian Heritage Council’s priority assessment list. The assessment was due to completed in August 2009, but the Australian Heritage Council sought and was granted an extension until late 2010.
The Emergency National Heritage Listing nomination was lodged to ensure that the Tarkine Road would be assessed against the National Heritage Listing provisions of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
