Five Tasmanian organisations working on sustainability and climate change issues, will today launch the 2009 Walk Against Warming, announcing it would be held in the unprotected forests of the Upper Florentine Valley, on December 12th at 12 noon. The event will form part of national and international community mobilisations, timed to coincide with the Copenhagen climate talks.
Vica Bayley, Campaign Director for the Wilderness Society pointed out that the single greatest contribution Tasmania can make to the global climate change challenge is to protect its native forests.
“The carbon-rich forests of the Upper Florentine are a fitting place for this year’s Walk Against warming,” he said. “Our forests store vast amounts of carbon and put simply, they are worth far more to us standing up.”
The Walk Against Warming has been authorised by current land managers Forestry Tasmania, with the exclusion zone that has barred public access for several years to be lifted to facilitate the community visit.
