The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed Premier David Bartlett’s belated admission that $23 million in public funds would be better invested in a range of jobs-creating projects for the North West rather than a single divisive and destructive loop road through the Tarkine wilderness.

Greens Environment spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said the Greens have long called for the $23 million set aside for the Tarkine loop road to be invested in protecting and promoting a Tarkine National Park, delivering sustainable job opportunities for the entire region, rather than just those communities along the proposed loop road route.

“Here we are nearly two years after this divisive road was first flagged, and three months out from a State election, and the Bartlett Government has apparently just seen the light,” said Ms O’Connor.

“I am certain North West communities will welcome this belated admission that the area is crying out for investment in a diverse range of job-creating projects, as outlined by the Cradle Coast Authority in cooperation with key stakeholders in its Tarkine Tourism Development Strategy.”

“The Greens believe the best way to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the Tarkine region is via the establishment of a Tarkine National Park.”

“The Premier’s sudden decision follows revelations to the Public Accounts Committee yesterday, which make it apparent that even if it obtained Commonwealth approval, the Department of Infrastructure could not begin any works along the loop road route until amendments are made to the Forestry Act and passed by Parliament, which won’t be sitting until after March 2010.”

“The Greens remain firmly of the view that the best way to invest the $23 million of public money is in the establishment of an iconic Tarkine National Park, with sensitive tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities to be built and staffed by locals, along with strategic road upgrades, and investment in a marketing campaign that highlights the Tarkine’s world class wilderness and cultural heritage values,” said Ms O’Connor.
