McCain’s announcement today that it will move part of its Smithton vegetable processing operations to New Zealand is extremely disappointing.

Our thoughts are with the 115 workers and their families who have today received this terrible news.

The State Government must do everything it can to ensure the affected workers and their families are supported through this extremely difficult time.

Today’s decision will also have negative flow-through effects to Tasmanian farmers, who are already doing it tough.

The direct impact to farmers, contractors and to the North West economy will be substantial, estimated at 25 million dollars per year.

It is a sad indictment on 11 years of Labor Government – and despite all of the Premier’s talk of making Tasmania a food bowl – that today’s decision has happened.
