The Tasmanian Greens today said that while a new Hospitality Minister will provide a welcome boost to the state’s critical Tourism sector, the Bartlett government should also create a Minister for Information and Communications Technology (ICT), in light of the opportunities which the broadband network rollout will provide.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said there is a clear need for an ICT Minister which has also been recognised by the peak ICT industry body in Tasmania, TasICT, who joined the Greens earlier this year in calling for a dedicated Tasmanian ICT Minister to maximise the benefits flowing from the growth of the sector.
“Tourism is an important growth sector for Tasmania, and a dedicated Hospitality Minister should provide a welcome boost, but there should also be equivalent government support for our ICT sector,” Mr McKim said.
“The ICT sector in Tasmania is growing rapidly and the NBN rollout means that the State needs a dedicated ICT Minister to provide leadership to this expanding sector.”
“The peak ICT industry body, TasICT, recently also supported a new ICT Ministry for Tasmania earlier this year but the Bartlett government has still not acted.”
