The Tasmanian Greens today congratulated the passionate young Tasmanians who are taking a direct hand in the planet’s future by joining in the Australian Youth Climate Coalition’s national campaign to send the strongest possible demand for action to the Copenhagen climate talks in December.

Greens Youth spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP attended the local launch of the national Youth Decide campaign at UTAS today where students joined long queues to log on to http://www.youthdecide.com.au/ to vote for the future they are entitled to hope for.

“It was inspiring to see so many young people lining up to sign up for change. On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens, I urge all concerned young Tasmanians between 12 – 29 to vote in Youth Decide.

“This is the generation that will feel the full brunt of climate change in the future, yet their voices are largely unheard by policy makers who are stalling on the urgent need for action to wind back our carbon emissions,” Ms O’Connor said.

“Today, from young Tasmanians, we heard an urgent message for meaningful action on climate change. I believe that voice will get louder and louder, across the island, the nation and around the world in the lead up to Copenhagen.”

“These young Tasmanians believe the science and they are rightly appalled by the posturing and short-term politics coming from both major parties on climate change.”

“They are dismayed by the apparent refusal on the part of the old parties, the big emitters, the coal lobby and the clearfell and burn loggers, to change their ways to give our youth hope for a sustainable, prosperous future.”

“These fantastic young leaders of the future deserve to be heard now. They are making a whole lot more sense than most Australian politicians – the Greens excepted – at present,” Ms O’Connor said.
