My reply:
I was delighted to read the article ‘Polluters to face a minimum sentence of three years in prison’ (3/9/2009).
We live in Tasmania, Australia which is meant to be Australia’s clean green island state.
However, our government supports planned burning by our forest industries (both government and private) for many months of the year . Their smoke is choking us to death. Because of the harm known to be caused to our people and because our Environmental Minister fails to adequately address the issue, the people of Tasmania have taken the unusual step of establishing a ‘Peoples’ Court’ to put her on trial. http://oldtt.pixelkey.biz/index.php?/weblog/article/the-trial-of-michelle-obyrne/
The Indonesian pollution laws should apply here in Australia as many people around the world would never get to hear how we have to live. People have to wear gas mask respirators and have to evacuate their homes.
I am asking your government to put pressure on our Prime Minister Mr. Kevin Rudd to adopt your Indonesian environmental pollution laws.
Perhaps other T T readers might like to reply also, or send an email or two to the Indonesian Embassy ([email protected]) congratulating them on something Tasmania and Australia find so hard to do.
