LEILA McMAHON-KUNTA, Text of a speech delivered at the Pipeline Picnic yesterday by 13 y.o. Leila McMahon-Kunta.
Hello, my name is Leila and I’m 13 years old. Now, I think I speak for everyone my age when I say that we are worried, We see a lot of destruction happening in our world and that makes us really concerned for our future.
We won’t thank you – the older generations – if you leave us a sick, polluted planet.
We won’t thank you if all of our unique animals are gone.
We won’t thank you if all our native forests disappear.
We won’t thank you if our water is undrinkable.
It is your responsibility to future generations to pass on a world that is in good shape. You are the caretakers.
We are too young to vote, so there isn’t much we can do. We can make our thoughts and feelings known to you, however, in the hope that you will do something before it is too late.
Please don’t let this pipeline be built; please don’t let this pulp mill go ahead.
Thank you.
