CALLING ALL MIGRANTS, STUDENTS, HOSPITALITY AND UNIVERSITY WORKERS, BUSINESSES: ONLY THREE DAYS LEFT TO REGISTER FOR LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Monique Huyskens, Greens Candidate for the upcoming Launceston City Council elections, today reminded the residents and businesspeople of Launceston that there are only 3 more days to register for the upcoming elections.
The Greens, in encouraging the widest participation possible in democratic processes, support the Launceston City Council and the Australian Electoral Commission in promoting residents’ and businessowners’ eligibility to vote in local elections. Many people still believe that it is necessary to be either a citizen or a ratepayer to vote in local elections.
Ms Huyskens said all those who have been residing in a local council area for longer than one month are eligible to vote, and this includes migrants, refugees, students, hospitality and university workers.
“There would be people living in this community who have been prohibited from voting, and even those who have suffered extreme persecution in attempting to vote. It is vitally important that eligible members of the community understand that they are entitled to a say in local affairs, and that the means to do so is made clear to them”.
“Businesses which have a registered address in a local council area are also able to nominate one person to represent the business in the election. This provides business owners with a direct say in the community where their business is located, even if they reside in another municipality”.
“I encourage all those eligible to enrol to vote and, in this way, have their say at the local government level”.
The Migrant Resource Centre at 95-99 Cameron Street has information on how to enroll and further forms and information are available on the Launceston City Council website: www.launceston.tas.gov.au.
