ROBERT SCOTNEY
THIS may indeed seem like a case of twisted knickers, and I think Philip you are right in saying that the Dalai Lama probably doesn’t care whether he gets an honorary doctorate or not. But the seriousness of the issue stands, and I must reiterate: this is not in any sense about so-called China bashing or hate, it is not about getting on the bandwagon. This issue goes to the heart of how decisions are made at the university, and what the consequences and real human costs of those decisions are – including how it treats and values its staff, and what ends the Vice Chancellor is prepared to go to for the sake of appeasing foreign governments.
On the issue of stakeholders, James, perhaps we should also ban all of the biological sciences if we find that a small but politically influential, like for example, Family First or the Exclusive Brethren group of parents (are not parents a little like governments?) are creationists who think Darwin’s theory is untrue and could harm their children?
