NICK McKIM
The Tasmanian Greens today called on Sotheby’s Auction House to withdraw from sale two busts of Tasmanian Aboriginal leaders Truganini and Woureddy, which are due to be auctioned next Monday. MR, Aug 21
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the best outcome would be for the busts to be returned to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
“Sotheby’s must realise the importance of these images to Tasmania’s Aboriginal community, and immediately withdraw them from sale,” said Mr McKim.
“To treat these images purely as works of art is disrespectful to the ancestors of Truganini and Woureddy.”
“If the others won’t do the right thing, then the State and Federal Governments should purchase them and hand them back to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community,” said Mr McKim.
