UNIQUE partnership between a conservation group and a farming family has resulted in a Tassie conservation triumph. Last year the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) bought the 500ha Vale of Belvoir grasslands near Cradle Mountain from the Charleston family. The family had used the grassland valley as summer pasture for cattle for more than 100 years. Now the TLC is continuing to allow the family to graze cattle on the land and is drawing on their management expertise to protect the vale which is the most significant area in the world for marsupial carnivores. TLC reserves manager Denna Kingdom said there were no other examples in Tasmania, and possibly Australia, where grazing had continued after land had been acquired for conservation.
