Tasmanian School of Forest Industries needed
· The hiring of 15 South African forest contractors shows Tasmania needs a School of Forest Industries as proposed by the Tasmanian Liberals.
· A School of Forest Industries would up-skill workers and provide relevant higher education opportunities.
· Ever since 2005 the Liberals have proposed a Tasmanian School of Forest Industries and Labor’s lack of vision and leadership has meant the government has ignored another good Liberal policy.
The value of the forest industry to Tasmania is unquestionable and Tasmania should be examining the opportunities for industry growth and development that a School of Forest Industries could provide.

Since 2005 the Tasmanian Liberals have advocated the establishment of a School of Forest Industries that can service the technical training, tertiary education and research requirements of the industry locally, and elsewhere.
This is the second occasion in the last ten years that Forestry Tasmania, after advertising locally for qualified foresters without success, have been forced to recruit from overseas.
The Liberals’ proposal for a Tasmanian School of Forest Industries is one that demonstrates leadership and commitment to the future of the forest industry in the state.
Instead of relying on employing workers from overseas, we can provide high quality education and training for Tasmanians that will contribute to our local forest industry.
The Australian Maritime College provides us with the perfect example of how Tasmania’s specialist industries can translate into a hugely successful and highly regarded training institute.
After more than 10 years in Government Labor has run out of steam, but the Liberals look forward to pursuing this initiative in cooperation with the University, the Skills Institute, and the forestry and timber industry.
