The pulp mill was only ever about subsidies…look at the subsidies of below market cost wood that are locked in for 20 years with Bob Gordon’s wood supply agreement. The wood sells for around $15 tonne to Gunns, while the public pays around $100 per tonne for firewood. That’s a loss to the public of $85 per tonne – 4 million tonnes per year is nearly $350 million just for that one item! With subsidies like that, anyone could ‘succeed’. Gunns has to make the project appear alive (like the movie Weekend at Bernie’s) at all costs to keep the subsidies flowing. Without taxpayers subsidies, ‘industrial forestry’ wouldn’t exist.
