THE leaders of Tasmania’s government business enterprises are paid more than $3 million a year combined. A salary breakdown of the chairmen and women and directors of the State’s GBEs and state-owned companies was released by the State Government last week for every director who sits on the board of a GBE or SOC in Tasmania. The information was released in the wake of the Sunday Tasmanian’s revelation that the chairman of the state’s controversial new water and sewerage corporations, Geoff Willis, receives $135,000 a year for working just one day a week. And his income can be boosted by up to $120,000 a year if he works an extra two days a week. … The GBE and SOC salary list contains some of Tasmania’s leading political, bureaucratic and business identities. At the top of the pay tree are Aurora’s John Hasker, Forestry Tasmania’s Adrian Kloeden, Hydro’s David Crean and Transend’s John Lord — who each earn a base salary of $107,338 for their roles as chairmen. … Mr Lord doubles as chairman of the Tasmanian irrigation Development Board, where he is paid an extra $96,000 — taking his annual salary to more than $200,000 for his work in the two part-time positions. Aurora, Forestry Tasmania, Hydro and Transend also have the highest paid board members, with each non-executive director earning $49,836. … Other notable government business board members include former premier Michael Field and his wife Jan, who sit on the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority and Transend boards respectively.
