Tasmanian statesman Don Wing supports preservation of the Upper Florentine forests

MEDIA RELEASE –11th March 2009

THE Wilderness Society today congratulated and thanked Don Wing (former president of the Legislative Council and current Member for Launceston) for his support of preserving the Upper Florentine forests.

Mr Wing visited the Upper Florentine last month with other members of the Legislative Council on a tour jointly facilitated by The Wilderness Society and Forestry Tasmania. He gave a passionate speech in the Legislative Council today in which he spoke of the values and grandeur of the Upper Florentine forests and expressed his view that they should not be logged.

“I warmly welcome Mr Wing’s support for the conservation of the Upper Florentine and congratulate his willingness to express his admiration for the forest and stand up for its protection,” said Vica Bayley, spokesperson for The Wilderness Society.

“The Wilderness Society appreciated the opportunity to visit the forests with Forestry Tasmania and discuss our respective viewpoints in an open and constructive way.

“We also valued the chance to do this in the company of a group of such respected and influential Tasmanians,” said Mr Bayley.

“We hope this signals a new era in open and fearless dialogue about the fate of Tasmania’s irreplaceable forests,” concluded Mr Bayley.
