Workers Compensation Changes – Treasurer
Can Prove Bona Fides to Working People
The Tasmanian Government is currently working through the recommendations of the Clayton
Report and the WorkCover Board in relation to improvements in the benefit design of the
Tasmanian Workers’ Compensation Scheme.
The cost of workers’ compensation insurance for Tasmanian employers has declined 40% since
the scheme was slashed in 2000 and it is time some justice was returned for injured workers.
The government appears to be under some pressure to not agree to the recommendations and
its decision on this matter is a key test of its worker-friendliness.
The government must reduce the burden of step downs on injured workers and must act quickly
to implement other changes.
Tasmanian workers have waited for over eight years for some justice to be put back into the
workers compensation system.
Secretary of Unions Tasmania, Simon Cocker said:
“Fixing our unfair workers’ compensation system will affect and protect the most vulnerable,
injured Tasmanian workers, in good times and in bad, for decades to come and this is the
government’s chance to finally rectify a long-term injustice.
“It’s important that the Government be guided by the thorough process that has been
engaged in and not be swayed at the last minute by the knee-jerk reactions to the
economic downturn.”
“It is not appropriate to ask injured workers to pay the cost of an economic downturn.”
“It is time for the government to prove its credentials with Tasmanian workers and to act.”
“Tasmanian working people should not have to wait any longer for a fair workers compensation
system.” said Mr Cocker
