Dear Premier Bartlett,
In anticipation of the State of the State address that your honoured self will be delivering on Tuesday, 3rd March 2009, I on behalf of Still Wild, Still Threatened have taken the liberty of compiling a list of concerns felt by Tasmanians in order to assist you in delivering a comprehensive and accurate description of this unique and precious state and its people. I trust you will address these concerns on Tuesday and reassure Tasmania of the strong and just leadership that your government provides.

• Financial losses incurred by the forestry industry

• Potential loss of employment in the forestry industry

• Lack of exit and retraining packages for Tasmanians employed in industrial scale old growth logging and woodchipping enterprises

• The lack of capitalistaion of our forests by tourism and craft based ventures

• The continued squandering of Tasmania’s natural heritage as woodchips

• The increased use of taxpayer resources as a result of increased road building operations in the most contentious native forests of Tasmania namely the Upper Florentine, the Weld and the Tarkine

• The increased strain on Tasmanian Police as a result of public outcry against said contentious operations

• The proposed use of native forests to sustain wood-fired power stations

• Tasmania’s unsatisfactory air quality at the time of regeneration burns conducted by Forestry Tasmania

• The threat to endangered Tasmanian animal species due to loss of habitat and stress based diseases

• The marked lack of transparency amongst Government Business Enterprises especially Forestry Tasmania

• The widening rift amongst the Tasmanian people caused by the interests of Gunns Ltd. These are troubled times sir and the people are looking to you for astute and potent leadership. I am convinced that you will do everything in your power to deliver the confidence and solidarity that will see us through this tumultuous and despairing global economic situation as one Tasmania, together and united.

Best regards,
Ali Alishah

Good one Ali, no doubt that will promote a whole raft of useless spin, as Bartlett tries to dress the skeleton in the cupboard in decent clothes. He is so much into presentation and good publicity, yet he has this looming problem – a vastly inefficient, unpopular and out-of-date industry that refuses to be accountable to the public. How can it be turned into something that puts more in to the state than it takes out?
