In fact he did not have the qualifications one would expect, infact in all the planning and preceding destruction in the area, he told us he was unaware that the area contained and was the breeding ground for the (federally protected) endangered giant freshwater crayfish. Not so impressive after all! Well as far as we were concerned that wasn’t good enough, as FT was not delivering on the agreement, as per the Code. Especially since this ‘said’ over qualified person, though infact, under qualified person accidentally and naively said the forest operations would silt up the pristine creek of the endangered giant freshwater crayfish. We therefore insisted on suitably qualified people to properly assess the values. (But take note that infact we also had to, with the array of rare, vulnerable and endangered species, prove their existence and supply and pay for reports). After properly taking into account the above ‘high conservation values’, the size of the harvesting coupe was reduced by about half. Boy didn’t that annoy FT. How dare we actually make them do what they say they do. So they sent us a letter having a go at us for costing the industry! Impressively they retained a free copy of our high conservation value reports and continue to completely trash this high conservation area. And that is and has been the current standard practice of Forestry Tasmania. Read more, Comment here
