PRESS RELEASE

PUBLIC RALLY TO PROTEST
THE PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION
OF THE SPIRIT OF THE SEA STATUE

Devonport ratepayers, Tasmanian taxpayers and all interested parties are invited to attend a Public Rally near the Vietnam Veterans BBQs on Victoria Parade in Devonport on Sunday 9th November at 5 pm.

People are opposed this project for many different reasons, including the lack of a selection process, the lack of community consultation, the outrageous waste of public monies, the irrelevant nature of the proposed statue and the questionable aesthetic quality of the statue.

This is an opportunity for all those opposed to the purchase and installation of the Spirit of the Sea statue, for whatever reason, to demonstrate their opposition by gathering near the proposed installation site.

The speakers will be Cassy O’Connor MP, Tasmanian Greens Member for Denison and Shadow Spokesperson for Tourism and the Arts, Jeremy Rockliff, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Member for Braddon, and Alister McCrae, community representative.

Petitions will be circulated at the rally.
We will be calling upon the Devonport City Council to reverse its decision to support the installation of the Spirit of the Sea statue at the Western breakwater at the mouth of the Mersey River.
We will also be calling upon the Devonport City Council to seek the agreement of the Tasmanian Government, to use the $180,000 provided by the government for an icon marker for the Mersey River, to fund other art project/s in Devonport that have broad community support as well as high artistic merit.

For their comfort, those attending should bring a chair or picnic rug to sit on.

So bring a picnic or a sausage to sizzle on the barbecues, bring the family, bring a placard and bring your voices.
Let’s stop this statue before it is too late!
