Hitler’s Tassie rants a hit online

SATIRICAL videos of Adolf Hitler ranting about the Gunns pulp mill, Tasmania’s bid for an AFL team and the Royal Hobart Hospital have become a surprise smash hit on YouTube. The clips are part of an internet fad to overdub a short scene from the oscar-nominated film Downfall, in which Hitler learns he has lost World War II, with new subtitles. Hobart public servant Keith Wheatland has been unmasked as the creator of five videos dealing with flashpoint local issues. In one, Hitler is told by his generals that the AFL has rejected Tasmania’s bid for a team. He bristles, before clearing the room and exploding in a bitter tirade in which he threatens to invade the mainland as payback. “But mein fuhrer, you can’t invade the mainland,” one of the generals warns. “Can’t! Tell that to Daryl Baldock, tell that to Ian Stewart,” Hitler replies, in reference to the all-conquering football greats. Read more here
