Lawyer denies job offer

A Hobart Lawyer has told a Parlimentry Inquiry he applied for the Tasmanian Solicitor General’s job but was knocked back. Stephen Estcourt today gave evidence to a Legislative Council Select Committee investigating senior public appointments. Read more here

Examiner: Mr Estcourt also condemned the so-called “shredder gate” scandal, which led to the resignation of Steve Kons from Cabinet. “It was disgusting that the magistrates’ appointment reached the stage where a decision for Cabinet was prepared and then destroyed,” he said. The Chairman of the Select Committee, Independent MLC Paul Harriss, said the committee was likely to hear evidence from the current Solicitor General, Leigh Sealy. He said the Committee may call evidence from the former Secretary to DPAC, Linda Hornsey, but a definite decision had not yet been made. Read more here
