Ex gratia payments buy silence, and settle the matter for the employer – without accepting any formal responsibility for the claim. Look back at the dates in the list that I’ve compiled: you will see that Bartlett waited 7-8 days before he told McKim about the letter. Would he have told anyone if Wriedt had not taken matters into her own hands? Shouldn’t he have done something to help her, knowing that she had had depression? I feel that he should have accepted her resignation – on compassionate grounds, and the sad thing about this political party is that it is not outlandish to ask whether Bartlett might have been protecting his own government’s skin by not accepting her resignation when she offered it on the weekend before she acted.
