Far from being just a local sensation, leatherwood honey is sought by epicureans the world over.
PRESS RELEASE
Attention media outlets: your assistance with promoting this iconic Tasmanian industry is greatly appreciated.
Honey producers of every size, and from all regions, were well represented at the 2008 Wrest Point Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards, held on the 15th-17th of August. The competition included mainland honey producers.
Tasmanian honey producers took out twenty seven gold medals and two bronze medals, as well as one of the event’s two major awards, the prestigious Minister for Primary Industry Award, which was won by Australian Honey Products’ Organic Rainforest Wildflower Honey.
A perennial favourite, leatherwood honey was popular among the judges. Unique to Tasmania, this iconic product is produced from the leatherwood tree which grows in Tasmania’s rainforests.
Leatherwood honey production is a family tradition for many of Tasmania’s honey producers, and it is the backbone of a unique industry that provides an estimated 188 million dollars worth of pollination to our agricultural and horticultural industries each year (DPIW, 2001).
Far from being just a local sensation, leatherwood honey is sought by epicureans the world over.
