Since 1998 it has been Labor Party Election Policy to establish an independent process for external review of serious matters/ allegations against police. Their policy from 1998 recommended a retired judge be the appropriate person to conduct such reviews. Tasmania Police deserve the best level of accountability to give them confidence in their own force and good preventive OH&S;standards. The community expect best practice accountability standards for Tasmania Police to bring Tasmania in to line with other states. The failure of successive governments in Tasmania to implement external review of police raises some interesting questions. Can Premier Bartlett please explain why have successive governments been reluctant to establish an independent mechanism to review police operations in Tasmania.
