“But mum, how can other police decide if the top cop is a baddie or a goodie if he’s their boss?” Rather startled this time, and a tad amused, I acknowledged that my little lawyer-in-waiting in the back seat had just asked a question that went to the heart of the Jack Johnston investigation. I told him it was a very good question that many others, including Premier David Bartlett and Opposition party leaders Will Hodgman and Nick McKim, were trying to work out too. More silence. Then the kid’s final trump card born of hours of schoolyard battles was played. “I bet the number two top cop must be really pleased!” I relate this anecdote for one simple reason: in three brief questions a youngster had got to the nub of complex legal arguments that now look like entangling the Bartlett Government and Tasmanian politics for days, if not weeks.
