The GetUp! climate action torch visited the Florentine forest defenders camp today (Sat) to link the critical need for the preservation of old growth forests with the fight against global warming.
Accompanied by cheering onlookers a relay was run through the forest with the torch being handed over in the camp to a forest defender who then took the torch (and it’s lemon) up a rope to one of the tree-sitters, who abseiled down to finish the final lap of the relay.
It was a fun day for everyone but behind the event is the message that old growth forests are vital carbon stores and that logging of native forests in Australia should stop immediately, for the sake of the planet and for our children.
