Details Of Waterfront Development Proposal Released

Premier David Bartlett has today released details of Hunter Developments’ proposed redevelopment of Brooke Street Pier and associated facilities on the Hobart waterfront.

Mr Bartlett said the consortium’s submission had been received by the Premier’s Office late on Friday and he was releasing them publicly today at the very first opportunity.

“I am determined to prove that there is no substance to any claims of secrecy or lack of transparency by me or this Government on this or any other matter,” Mr Bartlett said.

“That is why I am making a 16-page summary outlining the basic proposed development available to the public via the media.

“The public is being given access to this information less than a day after I received it.

“This is a good example of the Tasmanian Government taking the public into its confidence and sharing information in a very timely fashion on a development proposal in which the public rightly has a keen interest.”

Mr Bartlett said it was important for the community to understand the proposed development was still in the conceptual stage.

He said he would insist on any development going through the full planning process, with inbuilt opportunity for public comment.

The Premier said he would not waver from the public commitment he gave on Friday to make a major speech on waterfront development in the coming weeks providing an update on process.

“I believe it is in the public interest that as much information is out there as possible to help inform the public,” Mr Bartlett said.

“I want to ensure that the public and stakeholders are part of the process to redevelop our waterfront.

“I would also strongly encourage Tasports and Hunters Developments as the parties who will be advancing this development agreement to ensure there is a robust process for consulting with stakeholders and keeping the public informed during the development process.

“I repeat that the process to identify a preferred developer has been at complete arm’s length from executive government.

“There are a number of statutory and independent planning processes which must be followed before this development can be finalised.”
