A shrunken concern

A political contraction which in 1998 was seen by the electorate as a way of saving on the cost of state politicians — and by both the major Labor and Liberal parties as a way of gutting the number of seats held by the pesky Greens — has now become both a liability and a source of political shame to Tasmania. That this gutting of political standing — and political standards — has occurred in the Australian state that prides itself on having the fairest electoral system in the world is a double source of embarrassment.
