This harks back to the short-term mentality last witnessed in New Zealand in the 1950’s, where swathes of forests were felled for short-term financial gain. Those areas are now a loss to future generations, erosion prone and marginal farmland at best.

I HAVE just returned from visiting your beautiful Island.

Your native forests are stunning and world class, and this comes from a New Zealander surrounded by forests.

However, I am dismayed to learn that certain areas of native forests are to be “pulped”.

This harks back to the short-term mentality last witnessed in New Zealand in the 1950’s, where swathes of forests were felled for short-term financial gain. Those areas are now a loss to future generations, erosion prone and marginal farmland at best.

Eco-tourism is now big business worldwide, with the returns for outweighing one off pulp payments. New Zealand forest walks are now overcrowded, such is their popularity. New tracks are being developed every year.

I understand that your Minister for Forests has been dismissed, which sounds like a step in the right direction. Please keep the pressure on your government and save your beautiful Island.

Your Sincerely

Dunbar Sloane Jnr.
