“It now appears that Premier Bartlett is prepared to thumb his nose at the many Tasmanians who have demanded loudly that high parliamentary standards must be set and upheld, and by ignoring this public sentiment Mr Bartlett is emulating the same arrogant and dismissive approach of his predecessor, Paul Lennon.”

The Tasmanian Greens today said that the appointment of disgraced ex-Deputy Premier Bryan Green to the position of Head of the Road Safety Council reveals that the Labor government intends to continue with its plan to reinstate Mr Green into positions of public responsibility despite public opposition, and have described the move as “sneaky and underhand”.

Greens Opposition Leader Peg Putt MP said that this Road Safety Council appointment was obviously in the pipeline when Mr Green attempted to rewrite history in a speech to Parliament last Wednesday, and that it should have been made public at the time.

Ms Putt also said that this appointment is a slap in the face for the community and that by ignoring the loud public calls for high parliamentary standards to be reinforced it is apparent that new Premier David Bartlett intends to emulate the practice of the old Premier, Paul Lennon.

“This appointment of Mr Green to the position of Head of the Road Safety Council, now reveals exactly what was going on last week when Mr Green attempted to rewrite the history of the TCC scandal, and the fact that he was about to be promoted to this position of considerably public responsibility should have been announced at the time,” Ms Putt said.

“It was sneaky and underhand for Bartlett Labor to engage on a deliberate and staggered campaign to convince everyone that ‘really he didn’t do anything too bad’ via a revisionist speech one day before announcing his promotion four days later.”
