The Hag

LATEST rumour, No 4, is that Andritz have pulled their staff from Launceston. That’s 1. Federal Labor initiating the 17% poll, 2. Pitt and Sherry laying off Melbourne mill staff, 3. Smorgon’s being told to halt fencing the site. More rumours on the way regarding Forestry’s looking for, and paying international ‘experts’ to endorse their practices. Smoke without fire? Or just wishful thinking? And did you see the huge burn off east of Launceston today. Someone chucked a flare into govt. offices, but alas Cox and O’Byrne weren’t there to inhale the smoke.

Meanwhile … Merit-based appointments: Ha, ha, ha …
Dear Hag,

After the Rys Edwards appointment to head of DPAC and Premier Bartlett’s defence of senior appointment in his Government ( Bartlett defends jobs choice ). When I was in the Tasmanian Public Service there was a running joke in the tea room regarding the nepotism and cronyism that pervaded the ‘internal’ appointments of mates to senior management jobs.

Management always justified these as above board and called it ‘the merit principle of appointment’. The joke? MERIT was an cynical acronym standing for Mates Employed Regardless of Intellectual Talent!
